Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.

The Bible commends hospitability (Matthew 10:14, 40; Hebrews 13:2). The Old Testament mentions and illustrates examples of people who were blessed by their hospitality (Genesis 18; Joshua 2). God reminds the Israelites of their captivity period in Egypt in commanding them to show kindness and hospitality to aliens and strangers in their new land (Deuteronomy 10:19; Leviticus 19:34). This shows the heart of God. God accommodates and welcomes the least of all.

Here in this case, the welcoming of one another might refer to the Christian brothers and sisters who were seeking refuge during their travels. In welcoming others, they’re risking some parts of their safety to the strangers. But apostle Peter exhorts them to do it cheerfully. The blessing of hospitality is promised in the Bible (Matthew 10:40, 41, Hebrews 13:2). God is no debtor of any man (Romans 11:35). There is no blessing when we offer our service to others with complains and grumbling. God is not pleased with such sacrifice (2 Corinthians 9:7).

Prayer: Lord, grant us a heart to welcome and accommodate people in our lives. Give us a heart like yours and may we be blessed as we obey your commands with a willing heart. In Jesus name, amen.
