Job 1:20, 21
At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said:
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.”
The true character of a righteous man is treasuring God above everything else. Job lost all his possessions, his seven sons and three daughters, and his health; but he did not blame God for his misfortune. Instead, he chose to maintain the right attitude of acknowledging God’s sovereignty over his good fortune and losses. Job declares, “Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” (2:10b). Job’s statement is one that defines a true follower of God. We do not merely serve God because we receive good things from Him. We serve and worship Him because He is God.
