The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Luke 1:35

This verse is a response of the angel Gabriel to Mary's question in the previous verse, "How will this be, since I am a virgin?" (1:34). Mary is perplexed and confused at the strange greetings of the angel Gabriel who pronounced that she will conceive and give birth to a son, and she is to call him Jesus (1:31). Mary asked a legit question in regard to the process of Jesus' birth. She was not expecting to be the mother of the Messiah. It was a surprising yet good news for her!

She was wanting to know how the birth would be like! She was not being skeptical but prodding for more details! That's where the angel Gabriel gave her the answer in Luke 1:35, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you," the formation of Jesus in Mary's womb will be an act of the Holy Spirit enveloping her to procreating the child. It is the miraculous power of God that will bring about the formation of Jesus' body in Mary's womb.

And for that reason, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Jesus is called the Son of God because of two reasons: Jesus is Divine and he is the expected Jewish Messiah (1:32, 33). Jesus is the King that will reign forever and so his kingdom will extend through all eternity. He is truly the King that confounded the proud and brings hope for all who would trust in this humble Savior.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, you came down to earth in the form of a child. Your birth is supernatural and you are the Holy one and the Divine Son of God. I acknowledge you as my King and Savior. Holy Spirit, come and fill me with your holy presence. In Christ Jesus name, amen.
