Proverbs 3:1-2

My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.

The promise of remembering and keeping God’s commands comes with tremendous blessings: long life (fulfilling/life worth living (Amplified Version)), peace and prosperity    (completeness/well-being; the state of being at ease externally and internally (Vine’s Expository Dictionary of the Old Testament Words). The person speaking in this verse is that of a loving father addressing his son to not forget the teachings that he had learnt since he was a boy. The figure of God as a father to his children is also depicted in verse 1.

The discipline of the mind and heart is important to acquire this blessing. There is this need of learning to keep our minds constantly in touch with God’s words and to let it seriously affect our lives. Indeed, keeping in touch with God’s word is the only way to let it sink into our hearts and thereby letting it take control over us.

As a loving father, God wants his children to be blessed with fulfilling lives and enjoy the total well-being of both physical and spiritual blessings. The pure satisfaction of God’s blessing goes beyond the physical and material prosperity. It covers all aspect of one’s life and the life to come. Therefore, the condition that God expects of us is to discipline our minds and hearts to remember and let those teachings affect every aspect of our lives.

Prayer: God, Give me the will and the power to discipline my thoughts and hearts to lean on to your precious teachings. Thank you for your wonderful and undying promises, amen.
