1 Peter 2:12

12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

It should be clear to the Christians that pure rhetoric on the pulpits does not glorify God. It does not help people see the beauty of God. It is not speech alone but deeds that displays the goodness of God. Remember James when he gave an example of a needy brother or sister in need. In response, a person merely gave a smooth talk, “Go in peace (Shalom, words of blessing); keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about it (James 2:15-17), it is a fake faith. True faith results in good deeds.

The Christians were accused of rebelling against the state-based laws (worship of Emperor, not participating in the pagan festivals), incest (calling one another “brothers” and “sisters”) while some were persecuted for just being called a Christian (1 Peter 4:14). But Peter would not want the Christians to let the unbelievers find any concrete/legit basis of wrongdoings against the Christian community.

People may be able to pull down Christian arguments of faith and beliefs but not against their works and deeds. Peter knew exactly what he was saying. The greatest apology (defense) for Christianity is living out the teachings of the Gospel. When an unbeliever experiences the visitation of God in their lives, they will glorify God for the real power that changes lives. Therefore, the command here is “Live” not “Talk.”

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Help us to imitate you. Help us to love and pray for those who mistreat and persecute us. Help us love the unlovable and forgive the undeserved. In Christ name, amen.
