And the words of the LORD are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times.
In Psalm 12, the psalmist sincerely admits the fact that humans have totally become duplicitous and untrustworthy. They speak sound words but do not act on it. They do not think of being kind to others anymore. They speak arrogantly with their tongue and speak lies to their neighbour to solely gain their advantage. They think they will triumph with their boastful speeches and blatantly ignore the cries of the poor and the needy. But Jehovah declares that he will rise to the moment and see to it that the sighing of the needy and the oppressed are liberated and set right the proud lips of the wicked.
The Psalmist draws a line between human faulty promises and God’s words. The words of Jehovah are flawless (pure and free of corruption), like silver purified in a crucible (like the precious metal which have gone through severe testing whereby the dross and impure element have totally been removed; the words of the LORD remains ever true even in the midst of changing times and situations), like gold (it is too valuable and costly) refined seven times (it is a number of perfection). In simple sense, the word of the LORD unlike humans is completely reliable and trustworthy. Even today, His promises to the believers are “Yes” and “Amen” in Christ. In regard to the wicked people, God will keep his words and bring about righteous judgments on the Final Day.
Prayer: Lord, I put my confidence in your words and promises. I thank you for the precious words that give life to all who love them, amen.
