To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 1 Peter 2:21
Why do Christians suffer? Because we are called to follow in the steps of Christ. As Christ suffered unjustly for his righteous deeds and in return for his good works, received a beating, so also, Christians are not susceptible to pain and suffering. Christ's suffering was for us-the salvation of our souls. Not only that, He had to face tremendous persecution from his own people and family during his life of ministry on earth. During his final trial, Christ still did not retaliate or defended himself against serious charges against him (Matthew 26:63-68).
Christ followed the path of love and grace towards his enemies. He was willing to lay down his life for his tormentors. He sought to bring people to Himself through his selfless love and suffering. He did not force or intimidate people to follow His way. It was His love that conquered the hatred and violence of men. In the same way, Christians are called to follow the path of love towards one's enemies and show genuine concern for the lost brothers and sisters even if it means having to sacrifice one's life on the altar.
It also reminds us that Christ's followers are not to walk the path of self-indulgence and selfishness. The path is narrow and not easy. Being Christ's followers means saying "No" to oneself and "Yes" to all that God commands in his word. It requires great commitment and sacrifice. Christ's followers must decide to take this road of self-denial and altruism. As Christ was exalted so also will the Christians be glorified for choosing to follow Christ and His ways. Indeed, the glory that will be revealed in us will far outweigh the pain and suffering we face here on earth. The reward will be great!
Prayer: Lord, I want to be a true follower of yours. Make me strong and embolden me to follow you to the end. In Christ's name, amen.
