1 Peter 2:25
25 For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
Peter here gives the imagery of a sheep wandering on its own (Jeremiah 3:22). The people have wandered from the fold of God’s presence and fellowship. There was no protection and guidance. In the past, the believers were without a Shepherd and in dangers of wild animals who preys on ignorant sheep. The sheep were in danger of attacks and desolation.
But now, the believers have returned to the Shepherd, the guardian and protector of our souls. Psalm 23 rings loud as we read this verse. We need not fear of Satan’s attacks and accusations for we are shielded with the righteousness of Christ. We need not fear lack and poverty for he will lead us to green pasture. We need not fear death for he will lead us through the valley of the shadow of death. We need not fear evil for He is with us. We need not fear spiritual attacks—loneliness, fear and grief, for his rod (protection) and His staff (to guide) comfort and console us. We need not fear our enemies for he will prepare a table for us to feast and enjoy. We need not fear failures for our God will honor us and fill our cups to overflowing. His kindness and love will always be with us each day of our lives and we will be welcomed into His presence at the end of this life journey.
No guru/teacher can protect our souls. Only the one who has created us is capable of guarding and sheltering our souls. Until a person returns to Christ, he/she is in danger of being assaulted, overpowered and mauled by the power of the enemy. Run to Him today and be saved!
