1 Peter 3:5, 6
5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.
The true adornment of the godly women of the past was not outward adornment but inward characters of loyalty, love, gentleness and serene demeanor. For instance, Esther, a Jewish orphan girl was chosen as the Persian Queen for her beauty. She was not only beautiful but courageous. She did not act rashly when she got the news from her uncle about the threats of deaths by the wicked official Haman. She took time to pray and fast about the impending news. She took time to convey the message to the Persian King at the right time and at the right moment. It was her wise act that saved the whole nation of Jews in the Kingdom of Persia.
Likewise, Sarah was also known for her outward beauty. On their sojourn to Egypt because of famine (Genesis 12), Abram was fearful that the Egyptians might kill him and take Sarah away because she was beautiful. Though beautiful, Sarah did not take pride in it. She submitted to her only husband Abram and addressed him as her Master (in ancient times, a common title of honor and respect, Amplified). Now, I’m not in any way implying that all women should call their husband, “Master or Lord.” Nonetheless, the Bible command wives to put on the inner clothes of submissiveness, peace and loyalty. In putting on these inner adornments, they will exemplify the true nature of a godly woman who is worthy of honor. The wives, then, join the ranks of godly women who proclaimed the goodness of God through their lifestyle.
Prayer: Abba Father, Thank you for counting us with the godly people of the past. We desire to live like them and bring glory to your name. May you grant us the courage to stand for the truth of your word, amen.
