Rise up and help us; rescue us because of your unfailing love.
In Psalm 44, the Israelites understood that God alone gives victory. They couldn’t conquer nations and cities in their own power and might. They also couldn’t protect themselves from their wicked foes and although they continued to remember the name of God, they were trampled by their enemies to the ground. It was in such a dire situation that the Psalmist cries out to God for help. He appeals to God not on Israelites’ faithfulness but on God’s unfailing love. Time and again, the Israelites had to realize the inability of their own feeble strength to stand against the mighty nations. They had to solely depend on God for their deliverance and rescue.
Nobody can save but God alone. No one can, on their own merits, ask God for help. In it, we realize the powerlessness of man and the revelation of God’s power and strength. We ask God for help based on his loving nature. The prayer for help is for deliverance from the enemy’s hands. It was a cry of desperation from the oppression and misery of God’s people. Ultimately, God will bring about victory for his own name and glory.
Prayer: Lord, thank you that there is victory in your name. I look to you alone for my salvation and protection, amen.
