But God will never forget the needy; the hope of the afflicted will never perish.

It is so important to note that the God of the Bible is the God of the weak, the needy and the broken. He sides with them and does not ignore their cry. The Israelites were oppressed at the hands of the cruel Egyptians for hundreds of years. Their moans and cry went up to God. So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them (Exodus 2:23-25). The question of suffering and oppressions comes to mind when we talk of a good, loving concerned God. Why does God not act quickly and come to the rescue of suffering community? Why is He holding back from letting the oppressor go free while the oppressed bounded? Why?

Even in this context of the Psalm, David assures the readers that God is a safe haven for the oppressed and a Divine ruler who judges the world fairly. He also points out that the wicked will go down to the realm of dead. Those who forsake God will not be remembered long but the hope of the poor and afflicted will not vanish. God will make sure that they truly get justice at the end of the day. Remember that God keeps his promise. He is not a God who lies. Indeed, God will act on behalf of the needy and the oppressed. God will bring about justice in His own right time.

As God raised Moses to liberate the community of Israel in Egypt, so also He will bring about deliverance through the agent of human beings. At times, God will speak to his people to act on behalf of Him to meet the needs of His suffering children. We see that repeatedly in the book of Judges. For example: In Judges 4, we get to read of Israelites’ plight at the hands of foreign countries surrounding them. They suffered greatly at the hands of Medianites for seven years, and so God raised up Gideon for the specific task of taking up leadership to free the people of God. We see this history repeat over and over as we see it unfold in the person of Jesus Christ, who ultimately suffered on behalf of human race and freed His creation from the bondage of evil and sin. Therefore, God proved his faithfulness in the person of Christ and He will do it again at the Day of Judgment (Hebrews 9:27, 28). Every single person will have to give an account for the deeds done while in the body (2 Corinthians 5:10).

Prayer: Lord, thank you that you are not blind to the suffering of the world. And that in your own perfect time, you will execute righteous judgment for your glory, amen.
